BeNew, Inc. is a Michigan-based non-profit that was formed because we see the value in trying new things, and the importance of being able to do so in an environment where we can learn without fear or judgement. The goal is to help others cultivate happy lives by giving you a place to step outside your comfort zone. We want to help you be new.
“Ok. New at what?”

Currently our focus is in helping adults learn inheritable outdoor skills. We consider “inheritable skills” to be the range of expertise that is normally passed down from generation to generation by families who participate regularly in an activity. In the outdoors, this includes the collection of skills that surround activities such as fishing, hunting, camping, paddling, and backpacking (among other activities). We recognize that not everyone is brought up in an outdoorsy home and that (especially as we get older) our interest in trying something might become offset by the aversion to possibly being bad at something. That’s where we come in. We get it. We see you. Our hope is that we help to foster future generations of adventurous, outdoor-loving people by helping you be new.
We also think being new is the starting point for living an intentionally happy life. Here are a couple “happy” little coincidences (backed by science)…
Studies continue to link happiness with good health. Better heart health, improved immune responses and lower risk of stroke (among others) have all been positively associated with happiness.
The results are in. Higher levels of happiness are associated with lower levels of cortisol.
Not only that, but data seems to show that increasing happiness can improve decision-making and problem-solving skills, and lead to higher levels of engagement at work.
Ready for a change but feeling frozen in place? Let us help. Sometimes having someone on your team who can help you connect the dots is all you need to take the scariest step: trying something new.
First we find and vet local groups that have the right ingredients to change lives. Then we get creative in figuring out how to help them grow.
Just as important as finding a good thing, is sticking with that good thing. We work with groups to help them improve and maintain a positive, engaged, and active culture.

Unfortunately, happiness is not straightforward math. It is multifaceted, difficult to measure, and subjectively experienced. Some of it (probably less than you’d like to admit) has to do with genetics and individual circumstances. Another huge chunk of happiness is about the perspective in which you view the world. Then there is a chunk we consider the building blocks of a happy life. They are habits. Things we can fall back on and just ‘do’ when we lose our perspective so we can get back there faster and keep it longer. It’s a working title, but right now we’re calling it ‘The Magic Mix.’ It’s not an extensive list, but these are the three things we look for in groups that we want to work and connect people with.
Loneliness is real, it’s extremely common, especially in certain demographics, and it’s miserable. The cure is spending time with others. Feeling part you are a valuable part of a community
Going outside has an exponential effect of happiness. In addition to having an inherently healing nature (pun intended), it also t increases activity which increases your sense of health, which actually increases your health objectively.
Altruistic action is simply about helping others. It’s not about being the boss, it’s not about being the best, it’s not about you. That said, making this a regular part of your life will change your life for the better.
